About AMI

Understanding the Alternative Mining Indaba and its mission

Our Story

The Alternative Mining Indaba (AMI) was established as a critical response to the mainstream Mining Indaba, providing a platform for voices often excluded from dominant narratives about mining and extractive industries in Africa.

Since its inception, AMI has brought together civil society organizations, affected communities, progressive academics, researchers, and policymakers to engage in honest, critical dialogue about the realities of mining on the African continent.

Unlike corporate-driven mining conferences, AMI centers the experiences and perspectives of those most affected by extractive industries, creating space for alternative visions of development that prioritize people and planet over profit.
